Bengaluru: A fashionable avenue in Indiranagar — 100 Feet Road — has been without streetlights for two years. If it weren’t for the illumination from nearby showrooms and businesses, those traveling the road would be navigating in complete darkness. This 2-kilometer stretch, which connects Old Madras Road to Old Airport Road, serves as a bustling center for shopping complexes, commercial venues, and pubs that attract large crowds. The BBMP initiated development of this road under the TenderSURE project two years ago, but locals report that the work remains unfinished, with the absence of streetlights and debris obstructing the footpaths. Resident Chinmay J expressed concerns about nighttime safety, stating, “As a frequent user of 100 Feet Road, I notice the lack of streetlights from Old Madras Road to Domlur towards Old Airport Road. While some sections have streetlights, they are non-functional. Should we rely on showroom lighting?” He highlighted the road’s constant activity, even past midnight, and recounted a recent theft incident where thieves broke into a car unnoticed due to the darkness. Chinmay has reached out to BBMP several times but was informed that the road’s status falls under the TenderSURE project, leaving him frustrated. “Is the TenderSURE project finished or not? Why has it taken two years to install streetlights, which are fundamental for public safety?” he questioned. Another resident, Sneha Nandiyal, echoed these sentiments, stating, “Traveling on 100 Feet Road at night is frightening. If we must rely on commercial lighting, what is the purpose of BBMP? Many women travel this road late at night; how can it be safe for anyone?” She noted that in July, she received a response from the BBMP chief engineer indicating that the cost for streetlights had been overlooked.
