West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has urged the police to expedite the investigation into the rape and murder case involving a doctor in Kolkata.

NEW DELHI: In response to widespread anger throughout the nation regarding the rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee issued a warning to the police on Monday, stating that if the case is not resolved by Sunday, she will transfer the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Mamata stated, “Should the police fail to resolve this matter by Sunday, we will refer the case to the CBI,” following her meeting with the family of the deceased doctor. The Chief Minister of Bengal, who has frequently criticized the CBI for allegedly operating under the directives of the BJP-led central government, further remarked, “Nonetheless, the central investigation agency has a notably low success rate.”

A 31-year-old physician was discovered deceased at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on Friday morning.

The following day, Kolkata Police apprehended a civic volunteer identified as the primary suspect in the case. The horrific details surrounding the rape and murder have instilled fear throughout the nation, leading to a nationwide strike by medical professionals in protest.

In addition, three Public Interest Litigations (PILs) were submitted to the Calcutta High Court, requesting a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the matter. However, with the suspect already in 14-day judicial custody, one may question why there is a demand from the opposition and others for a CBI investigation.

The aspect of suicide has also emerged in the discourse. Allegations of misconduct arose when the family of the deceased physician claimed that she was a victim of rape and murder. In an interview with Metro, her family accused the hospital of initially attempting to conceal the incident by labeling it as a suicide.

We seek justice for our daughter, who did not deserve this fate. It is imperative that the truth be revealed. I am perplexed as to why the hospital authorities initially claimed that she had taken her own life. What were they attempting to conceal?

Subsequently, the police dismissed the suicide theory following the initial autopsy report, which revealed that she had been murdered after enduring sexual assault.

The report detailed, “There was bleeding from both her eyes and mouth, along with injuries to her face. The victim also exhibited bleeding from her genital area and sustained injuries to her abdomen, left leg, neck, right hand, ring finger, and lips.”

      1. In a related development, another police officer indicated that circumstantial evidence suggests the possibility that the female doctor was initially murdered before being raped by the individual who has been apprehended.

“This is an extremely disgraceful incident. A thorough investigation is imperative. We are calling for a CBI inquiry, as the police initially classified the incident as a suicide and later reclassified it as a murder. The individual they have detained is also affiliated with the police force,” stated Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar.

“There is information indicating that the doctor was alone in the seminar hall of the hospital at the time of the assault by the suspect. She attempted to defend herself but was ultimately strangled to death. To ensure her demise, he also smothered her. It is conceivable that the accused may have raped her subsequent to the murder,” the officer informed Vijaya Chronicle.
